I love a good book and find reading a great form of relaxation, setting time aside for this is often hard, so me and my sister decided to encourage one another by creating our own little book club and this month’s chosen read was ‘This Is Going To Hurt: The Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay.
I started my Mexican adventure with some r&r time on the beautiful island of Holbox and it was the perfect setting to get lost in a good book… and boy did I get lost, I was hooked from page one.
I’ve always had respect for junior doctors and knew they worked hard but this book provides a candid insight into their lives, daily sacrifices and decisions they have to make and now my level of respect is off the scale, it was a terrifyingly truthful read.
The book is hilarious, horrifying and heartbreaking and certainly took me on an emotional rollercoaster. One page I would find myself belly laughing out loud and the next searching for tissues for a good old cry, and let me tell you it is not for the faint hearted as there are some graphically gross revelations too!
I love a book that really makes you think and assess life and this was certainly one of them, I took so much away, including that the human body is just incredible, junior doctors really are unsung heroes and we need to save our NHS quick sticks!
It is one of those reads that will stay engraved in my mind for a long time, Adams writing style is genius, if you haven’t read the book I highly recommend it and if you have I would love to hear what you thought.
Also please get in touch with book recommendations as I’m always on the hunt for my next great read.
